Originally built as the Royal Cabinet of Natural History, the building was transformed into an art museum by King Ferdinand VII in 1819.

    The collection also includes works from British, French, Italian, and Flemish artists as well as Spanish. While painting makes up the majority of the collection, the museum houses 900 sculptures and various decorative arts from Renaissance, Classical, and Baroque periods. Highlights include Las Meninas by Diego Velazquez and Third of May 1808 by Goya.

    1. Faunia Nature Park

    1. Museo del Marqués del Valles

    The museum is home to 19th-century pieces depicting everyday life and customs of the upper bourgeoisie, as well as the personal collections of Marcelino Zorrilla. He was a writer who earned recognition for his translations of José Maria de Eca de Queiros, Alexandre Dumas and Gabriele D’Annunzio among others, although his hot temper also got him involved in various affrays at cafes in turn-of-the-century Madrid.

    Valle de Xico Community Museum is an initiative of the local community as an active defence of their indigenous culture. The museum has saved thousands of pre-invasion artifacts from oblivion, as well as collaborating with Maria Thereza Alves on several projects including The Return of the Lake for dOCUMENTA 13.
